The Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, running from February until the end of April annually, is the premier series of race meetings in New South Wales. The carnival sees a plethora of excellent black type races held across the state’s major racecourses including the Royal Randwick and the Rosehill Gardens. Towards the tail end of the carnival some of the most anticipated and lucrative race days take place, finishing off the autumn season with a bang. Mid-April punters and spectators are treated to an elite line-up of races on the Australian Derby Day at Randwick. The feature race of the meeting is the Group 1 AJC Derby and other quality races to watch and bet on at this event include the Group 1 The Galaxy, Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap, Group 2 Sapphire Stakes and last but not least, the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes.

The Adrian Knox Stakes is a 2,000 metre staying race for three-year-old fillies run under quality handicap conditions. Stakes are set at $125 000 and it is one of the final fillies-only events of the carnival. Although the purse is not as generous in this race as many of the other carnival races, the stakes are much higher than just the prize money, as the winning filly of the Adrian Knox is exempt from ballot for the Group 1 AJC Australian Oaks, held the following week. A step up in distance at 2,400 metres, the Australian Oaks is one of the premier fillies’ events in August, and is a real test for the runners. Offering prize money of over $350 000 it is a highly lucrative and esteemed race. This is a very popular betting double, the Adrian Knox Stakes/Australian Oaks double, and offers punters fantastic payouts if they successfully pick the winning filly in both races. In recent years the Adrian Knox has been not only a great preparation race but also a terrific guide to the AJC Australian Oaks.
